Art and Antique Valuation Methodology — The A2Z Valuers Five-Layer Protocol
A structured valuation framework combining object identification, authentication, AATA status determination, condition assessment, and market comparables before arriving at the final Fair Market Value.
Object identification and category classification
Every object is first identified as completely as possible: type (sculpture, painting, decorative object, coin, textile); material (bronze, stone, paper, fabric); tradition (Mughal, Chola, PAG, colonial, Chinese export); period (claimed and assessed); dimensions; condition (overall).
Category classification determines the applicable authentication protocol and the applicable comparables database.
Authentication assessment
For classical art and antiques: physical examination; apparent period indicators; scientific analysis coordination where required (TL, XRF, GCMS, AMS).
For contemporary art: provenance research; catalogue raisonné cross-reference; style analysis; technical examination.
Authentication confidence level stated: Confirmed / Probable / Possible / Not Established. The value conclusion is calibrated to the authentication confidence level.
AATA status determination
Age determination (confirmed antiquity / probable antiquity / not an antiquity). ASI registration status. Export status (exportable / not exportable). Transfer restrictions.
Legal referral to artlaws.in for compliance questions. AATA status documented in the certificate.
Condition assessment
Completeness
No missing parts and assessment of the object's overall completeness.
Surface Condition
Patina, paint adhesion, glaze integrity and other surface characteristics.
Structural Integrity
Cracks, repairs, restoration and structural condition are assessed.
Provenance Documentation
Labels, inscriptions, stamps and available provenance documentation are examined.
Comparables and value conclusion
Rule 11UA(1)(a)
Rule 11UA(1)(a) FMV: the price the object would fetch if sold in the open market on the valuation date, estimated by a Registered Valuer.
Market comparables from the applicable auction database, adjusted for object-specific differences.
